Pitu

Pitu’s (Julie Rovira) painting is often described as neo-expressionist. It is in many ways—but the unique energy that radiates from it stems from a deep pictorial intuition. This instinct allows the artist to develop emotional figures, a wide spectrum of feelings, and sensitive situations in an astonishing gallery of portraits—countless siblings in the infinitely subtle family of hypersensitivity.

These faces truly seem related: sculpted by color, depicted in bust or full-length, in pairs, in trios, at the table, in the car. Round, mismatched eyes—concentric circles—illuminate full faces; colors drip, embed themselves, underline, or bloom into petal-like lashes. Each gaze is doubled, piercing, hypnotic, and delivers its emotional charge without hesitation.

The spontaneity of the painting is striking. It leaves no room for repetition. Each figure is reinvented with its own identity, personality, and emotional tone. The eyes are key, but so are the bridge of the nose, the cheekbones, the carmine-red mouth (the only element whose color never changes), and the hair—all of which define the emotional or sentimental tone of each character. And when figures are shown full-length, their clothing intuitively takes on its own symbolic patterns.

At times, emotion and memory call for drawing: other faces appear in black lines, embedded on the forehead or chest. A word or a name might emerge, speaking what cannot be clearly said—or cannot be forgotten. The monochrome backgrounds that surround the figures act like luminous screens, spotlighting their presence.

Pitu relentlessly explores emotional matter. She has chosen the pictorial adventure. She embraces free experimentation with techniques and materials, in line with her curious personality—drawing inspiration from Art Brut, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the CoBrA group.
