Since 1954, Eliane Larus’s favorite vacation spot was Les Sables d’Olonne, a tradition she kept until her teenage years.
In 2024, she returned to Les Sables and met Antoine Martineau, from the GAZ (General Art Zone) gallery, who offered her the opportunity to create an exhibition. This exhibition will present a diverse body of work, varying in format and materials: wood, canvas, paper, bronze, and painted metal sheets found in Les Sables d’Olonne.
Eliane Larus’s preferred medium remains wood, which she uses for both her paintings and polychrome sculptures.
Her work is multifaceted; it reveals a fragile humanity—at once touching and whimsical, yet also serious, as it often touches on themes of childhood and lost innocence.
A primitive poetry emanates from this world. But beyond the apparent naivety, her painting is also the site of a rather refined formal exploration.
In recent years, she has felt the need to free form, to leave more room for chance. She enjoys working with found and repurposed materials. Her latest discoveries are the “Sablaise Heads”: rounded painted metal sheets on which she draws, paints, and plays with the reliefs of the dented surfaces.
They are on display this summer at the GAZ gallery, alongside paintings, sculptures, and various objects. “I want to tell of a free world where beings and things come together, to express the poetry of a universe in which everyone can find something deeply personal.”
